After all the lectures, workshops, and case studies, you’ll present a comprehensive construction project management plan that will encompass everything you’ve learned and boost your skills.
Let’s lay the foundation: In this lesson, you’ll get an idea of the construction project management landscape to effectively navigate and succeed in this diverse industry. We’ll examine project delivery processes & methodologies, market segments – from industrial to commercial, and key participants behind any given project.
Assignment #1: Market Segment Analysis
Drill down on residential VS non-residential construction: Select one market segment and provide its overview, identifying key participants & their roles, unique challenges & opportunities, and analyzing current trends affecting your segment.
You should always start off with setting goals to ensure successful planning, execution, and completion of projects in line with stakeholder expectations. What are the key objectives and how to set them? We’ll focus on the “sacred cows” that all tie together and drive any construction process.
Assignment #2: Project Goal Development Exercise
Define project goals for a hypothetical construction project by aligning its program, design, finance, schedule, and budget with the discussed key objectives and expectations.
In this lesson, our architectural partner will share insights on key design phases that position the project up for implementation. How long does each phase take? What items are developed? What are the deliverables? We’ll answer these questions, so you can effectively collaborate with design teams and ensure the seamless translation of intent into successful construction projects.
Assignment #3: Design Process Evaluation
Select a structure in your local area and evaluate its design process, considering the key aspects of the items discussed. Describe your structure, identify potential challenges, and assess design process execution & how it affects the final outcome.
Pre-construction goes hand in hand and runs in parallel with the overall design process. In this class, you’ll learn essential concepts, such as cost estimating and assist methodologies, to effectively collaborate with project stakeholders and optimize outcomes during the critical early stages of construction.
Assignment #4: Pre-Construction Checklist
Create a pre-construction checklist that includes tasks for estimating and design assist methodology. Explain the significance of each item and provide a rationale for why it's included.
This class is all about an ideal and optimal procurement strategy. What’s the difference between RFQ and RFP & how to pursue them? How to decide on selection criteria & bring on the particular entity we’re looking to hire? Learn to make informed decisions to secure the best resources for your projects.
Assignment #5: Group Assignment
Draft an RFP to hire design and engineering services – it will be presented by a group representative during the following class.
Now that we’ve run all the previous stages, we can finally implement the construction. You’ll master key aspects of construction execution to ensure effective project management and its successful completion while adhering to industry standards and regulations.
Assignment #6: Means & Methods Analysis (optional)
Analyze a real construction project case study during its implementation phase. Provide an overview of the project, describe the means and methods used, evaluate their effectiveness, and discuss challenges faced and resolved.
For a project to be successful, it is essential to have an effective control strategy: It includes staying within budget and time constraints while ensuring high standards of quality and safety. In this class, we’ll cover various tools & processes deployed by construction teams, correct dashboard reporting, and critical path method schedules.
Assignment #7: Project Control Improvement Proposal (optional)
Research a construction project that faced challenges due to inadequate project controls. Summarize the project, identify the control issues, propose improvements & explain how they would contribute to project success.
What a segue from the previous class! Typically, projects without effective control strategy – with no proper schedule, cost management, safety checks, or quality reviews – will inevitably run into obstacles. What are these obstacles? And what are the real-life case studies that can teach us a lesson?
Often an area that is overlooked during a construction project delivery is absolutely critical for the building to be set up properly for its intended use. In this lesson, you’ll learn the essential steps for successful project completion, so you can transition a project to its owner while ensuring smooth operation and client satisfaction.
Assignment #8: FF&E and Technology Integration Plan (optional)
Develop a plan for procuring, installing, and integrating FF&E and technology systems for a construction project. Describe requirements, outline processes, and explain how proper integration contributes to building turnover and owner satisfaction.
Sometimes you might get locked into a certain career path early on, whether it’s working for an owner, a builder, or a developer. Which is not bad! But if you have aspirations to pivot outside and get a broader & richer career experience, we’ll teach you how to do that! As well as how employers can benefit from people with experience that differs from their core business.
There’s a lot going on: CLT is increasingly becoming a focus, and prefab is implemented on various construction sites. How do these items affect project delivery, cost, and overall planning? Learn to adapt to changing industry practices and leverage innovative solutions to enhance project outcomes.
Assignment #9: Technology Integration Proposal (optional)
Propose a plan for integrating innovative technologies like BIM, VR, drones, or other emerging tools into a construction project. Describe the selected technologies, implementation process, potential benefits, and challenges. How can these technologies enhance project outcomes?
Let’s finish what we’ve started! In this final class, you’ll learn to set up and manage project teams, navigate through project management process flows, evaluate & reflect on your performance to apply the newly-acquired skills in your future.
Assignment #10: Course Project: Construction Project Management Plan
Develop a comprehensive construction project management plan for a hypothetical or real project, covering its entire lifecycle and incorporating lessons learned from the course. Submit a written report and presentation to showcase your mastery of PM concepts and skills.
